So here’s a demo track that I’ve been working on for the past few days. I had recorded this track entirely on electric viola and the ‘bass’ that you hear is an electric viola detuned 2 octaves down with an EHX Pog. I’ve kept the bass but re-recorded the rhythm, harmony and solo parts with my acoustic.
I’ve written out all the parts except the solo with all the runs, a blaze of scales. Each time you hear it, the part is improvised. I tried writing it out but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted because the energy and spontaneity of improvisation was lost by reading the music off the page. I hope it’s not coming off like I’m trying to show off. That’s not what I’m after. In fact, half way through it, my left hand is exhausted and it’s a struggle to keep going! That’s the feeling I hope to convey in this section.
The second part is not quite where I want it yet. I think I played it too heavy and on the EP, I’m going to record something more transparent, with less vibrato, more whimsical, and less predictable.
I wanted to write a piece that had a moment of silence and a drastic change of character. I think the foundations are there and really, this demo version won’t be much different than what will be on the EP. If I can bring out more of a difference in character, I think I’ve got it!
